We have exciting news to share! As you know, Susan (Sherwood) Lawler has been supporting and nourishing The Birthing Inn for more than 20 years and in the role of sole owner for the last decade. Of course, that has been in addition to operating her own busy midwifery practice, All About Birth. With the support of the Tacoma birthing community, during her tenure The Birthing Inn has become a most beloved institution!

Susan has reached a point in her life where she would like to step back from some of the administrative and logistical responsibilities of running The Birthing Inn. In order to effect that change, Susan has sold The Birthing Inn to Dr. Steven Maynard and Xenia Maynard. Susan, in addition to continuing to practice as All About Birth, with deliveries at The Birthing Inn, will continue as clinical director of The Birthing Inn, providing consultations and organizing clinical activities.

Dr. Steven Maynard has operated a successful general OB/GYN and midwifery practice, Rainier OB/GYN, in Tacoma for the last 5 years. He is on staff at both Multicare Tacoma General Hospital and VMFH St. Joseph's Medical Center. During this period, Dr. Maynard has gained a reputation as strongly supportive of community midwifery, providing consultation and accepting transfers for hospital deliveries when clients require more care than can be offered in the community.

Xenia Maynard, who has supported and guided Rainier OB/GYN since its inception, comes from a business background. She holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Carnegie Mellon University.

Dr. Maynard, Xenia, and Susan are excited about this transition. They anticipate continuing The Birthing Inn's tradition of providing holistic maternity care with a commitment to health care justice, equity, inclusion, and appreciation of the beauty that exists in our diverse community. The Birthing Inn will continue to be South Sound’s premier freestanding birth center, "Where Families are Born."
