Birth Center Near Puyallup, WA
Warm, Personalized Birth Center Care for South Puget Sound Families
If you live in Puyallup, South Hill, Sumner, Bonney Lake, Graham, Orting, or anywhere in the South Puget Sound, The Birthing Inn is your closest freestanding birth center. Located in Tacoma, our CABC-accredited facility offers a peaceful, home-like alternative to hospital birth for families who want a natural, supported experience.
We know that choosing where to have your baby is one of the most personal decisions you will make. Families from the Puyallup area drive to The Birthing Inn because they want something different from the standard hospital experience. They want to feel known, unhurried, and cared for by a midwife who has walked alongside them throughout pregnancy. That is exactly what we offer.
Why Puyallup-Area Families Choose The Birthing Inn
The Birthing Inn has welcomed babies for over 25 years. We are Tacoma’s only freestanding birth center, accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers (CABC), and staffed by licensed midwives and certified nurse-midwives who collaborate with obstetricians to keep you and your baby safe.
Our facility features three private birthing suites, each with a large water birth tub and a private bathroom. The environment is designed to feel calm and comfortable, not clinical. Families have access to a full kitchen, lounge areas, and all the time and space they need to labor at their own pace.
Unlike a hospital, you will not share a room, wait for shift changes, or be hurried through the process. Your midwife stays with you through labor and delivery. That continuity of care is the reason so many South Puget Sound families make the short drive to our Tacoma location.
Getting Here from Puyallup
The Birthing Inn is located at 6002 Westgate Blvd., Suite 120, in the Pearl Place building in Tacoma. From downtown Puyallup, the drive is typically 25 to 30 minutes via WA-512 West and I-5. From South Hill, Sumner, and Bonney Lake, expect a similar drive time depending on your route.
Free parking is available on site. The private entrance to our birth center is located to the left of the main building entrance.
We encourage every family to visit before making a decision. Schedule a private tour or join one of our open house events to walk through the suites, meet staff, and ask questions in person.
Insurance, Medicaid, and Payment Options
We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicaid, Tricare, and many private insurers. Birth center care is often significantly less expensive than a hospital birth, even before insurance savings.
Not sure what your plan covers? Our team can help you understand your benefits and request a cost estimate. Visit our Birth Center Cost, Insurance and Fees page for detailed information, or call us at (253) 761-8939.
Questions from Puyallup-Area Families
FAQ
Is The Birthing Inn the closest birth center to Puyallup?
Yes. The Birthing Inn in Tacoma is the nearest freestanding birth center for families in Puyallup, South Hill, Sumner, Bonney Lake, Graham, Orting, Fife, and surrounding communities.
How do I choose a midwife?
Start by visiting our Meet Our Midwives page. Each midwife has her own practice, style, and availability. You choose the provider who feels like the best fit for your family.
When should I start prenatal care with a midwife?
Most families begin midwife care in the first trimester, but it is never too late to explore your options. Even if you are further along in pregnancy, we encourage you to reach out.
Is water birth available?
Yes. Each of our three birthing suites has a large tub designed for water birth. The tubs are also used for pain management and relaxation during labor, even if you choose not to deliver in the water.
What happens if complications arise during labor?
Your safety is our priority. The Birthing Inn has transfer agreements with local hospitals. If a complication develops, our midwife team manages the transfer and communicates directly with hospital staff.
Can I bring my children to the birth?
We do not recommend bringing other children to a birth because labor can be a long wait. Partners and one or two support persons are welcome in the suite, and additional family members can wait in the main room with kitchen access.
What classes and support do you offer?
We offer birthing classes, lactation and breastfeeding support, postpartum visits, and parenting resources. These services are available to all families, whether you deliver at our birth center or not.
